Columbus, Ohio, January 13, 2017 – The Board of Directors of Montaña de Luz (MdL) is pleased to announce Morgan Brown has been named the new Executive Director. Morgan succeeds Erika Shell Castro who has served as MdL’s Executive Director for the past six years.
The Board of Directors conducted a search throughout November and December, which generated many qualified applicants. Morgan impressed our search committee with his passion, energy, and work ethic. “After an extensive interview process with numerous candidates, the Board and U.S. staff stood unanimously behind Morgan. His experience, commitment to Hispanic children and families, and vision for the future made him the best choice to take Montaña de Luz to the next level,” said Laura DiFilippo, Board President. “We are so excited about his unique skill set that will bring new ideas to the organization!”
In Morgan’s previous role, he worked at expanding Hispanic outreach for The Ohio State University’s James Center for Cancer Health Equity by collaborating with community nonprofits and partners. He conducted focus groups, needs assessments, grant writing, and strategic planning activities for initiatives and programs at the OSU CCC-James. Prior to that, Morgan was a case manager and trainer at the Child Development Council of Franklin County, working with children and families from diverse cultures to deliver necessary services. Morgan is fluent in Spanish and has a Masters of International Development from the University of Pittsburgh.
Morgan wrote in his application, “I have a profound respect for the Hispanic community and have lived, studied, and worked abroad in Argentina, Mexico, Spain, and Brazil. Since returning to the United Stated, I have dedicated my career to serving low-income and minority communities.” Morgan is also the Treasurer on the Board of Directors for OSU Clinica Latina, a free clinic for low-income Latinos in Franklin County.
The transition from Erika to Morgan has been smooth and effective. Morgan is joining Erika in Honduras this week to meet the youth, in-country staff, and even some service team participants. The Board will be setting up numerous meet and greets over the coming weeks to introduce Morgan to supporters, volunteers, and churches. Please be on the lookout for these invitations!
Montaña de Luz’s Board of Directors and staff would like to extend our utmost gratitude to Erika Shell Castro for her service as Executive Director. Morgan will continue the projects and programs Erika initiated during her tenure as well as incorporate valuable stakeholder feedback into a sustainable plan for the organization’s future.
